Tomorrow we remember our heroes

Tomorrow many Papua New Guineans will take it as a normal public holiday, a chance to catch up on sleep, friends and family.

But despite it being a welcome break from work and school, last year’s parade host for the Remembrance Day celebrations, PNGDF Commander Brigadier General Gilbert Toropo, is calling on citizens to take time out and pay homage to the heroes that make tomorrow possible.

Last year while the Commander expressed disappointment at the lack of fanfare and awareness on such national holidays, this year he says that it’s up to each and every one of us to carry the story of the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels and be brave as citizens of this great thriving independent state.

He called on Papua New Guineans to celebrate tomorrow and be thankful for all their freedoms as Papua New Guineans and pay homage to those who fight for our sovereign independence and security in the past, present and future.

He says that the spirit of comradeship and pride should be synonymous with days like tomorrow and called on the people to embrace dawn services around the country as well as special parades like the memorial parade in Port Moresby.

Meantime, the memorial service will begin at 8am at the Ela Beach Memorial Park with the usual mounting of the guard by current serving and ex-servicemen of our armed forces.

All Port Moresby residents are encouraged to head down to Ela Beach to partake in the day’s celebrations and be part of the spirit of comradeship and unity celebrating the bravery forged by the initial partnership between the allied soldiers and our fallen Fuzzy Wuzzy heroes.
