Polye asks Baki to lift fraud director’s suspension

Opposition Leader Don Polye has written to Police Commissioner Gari Baki to lift the suspension of fraud squad director Matthew Damaru.

In a media conference today, Polye said Baki utterly failed our people and demeaned the office of the prime minister.

He urged Baki to let the National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate complete its work and not interfere through political dealings.

Baki said he suspended Damaru because he wanted to assume command and control of an erratic directorate. He said the directorate was out of control.

He also suspended the immediate staff for their continuous defiance of administrative direction, which amounts to insubordination.

Baki also suspended the officer-in-charge of fraud, Inspector Joel Simatab, who will be charged and arrested for bribery and official corruption allegations.

Four other members of the fraud directorate are also under probe for unsanctioned investigations into the Simbu Provincial Administration.

Other members of the NFACD will be looked into for alleged personal enrichment.
