Melbourne exhibition extends invitation to PNG artists

The curators of an art exhibition based in Melbourne, Australia, are calling for Papua New Guinean artists to submit work for the upcoming 'Sampari Exhibition and Art Sale'.

Sampari is a visual arts exhibition raising awareness about the struggle for freedom of the West Papuan people.

This exposition will open on December 2-11at the Australian Catholic University Art Gallery, in Melbourne.

The inaugural Sampari 2015 attracted glass works, contemporary collage, printing, wirework, photography, film, traditional weaving, mixed media, street sculpture and oil paintings. Half the works were sold during the exhibition.

This year, the curators are looking for an even more diverse selection; again, inspired by West Papuans, their culture(s), politics, history, or extraordinary maritime and territorial environments.

The Sampari Exhibition will feature a special space titled the 'Melanesian Wall of Art'. This is reserved for the work of artists who live in/are from the Melanesian nations that are members of the MSG (Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, the Kanak of New Caledonia, Fiji, Papua New Guinea).

Emailed submissions for inclusion in the exhibition are due by October 17.

The artworks of PNG artists need to be inspired by West Papuans, or West Papua, or PNG's relations with the emerging new state; and be A4 sized.

The submissions form is available for download here http://dfait.federalrepublicofwestpapua.org/melanesian-wall-of-art-2016-sampari-art-exhibition-sale-for-west-papua/

Sales of prints will be split 50/50 between the artist and the Federal Republic of West Papua Women’s office, which is a volunteer organisation working for the self-determination and independence of West Papua.
