Kokoda walk to reflect – Lae youths

Sixteen young men from Morobe Province arrived in Port Moresby after walking the Kokoda Track for four days.

The young men all live at the notorious Sialum Compound in Lae City. Most of them have been involved with various crimes in the city.

This year they formed a group called “ Agents of Change” with the aim of leaving behind their bad life style.

They have been advocating for change within their community and others in Lae City.

With the help of their community they raised more than K1000 which they used to buy food and clothes and pay for their transport.

They had written letters to their local leaders but received no response.

Jioi Simoi is their group leader and he says the walk was for the boys to reflect on life and the changed life they want to have.

They left Lae City on August 16th on a boat and arrived in Popondetta where they spent at least four days working with Oro’s Urban Youth Foundation.

On the 20th they started their journey on the Kokoda Track.

Simoi says the walk was hard but the boys persevered.

They arrived on Monday night at Sogeri.
