HP Sport marks International Students Day

High Performance Sport Papua New Guinea successfully hosted International Students Day in Lae and Port Moresby this month.

November 17 is the day marked to celebrate daily student life at tertiary institutions around the world.

HPS PNG Talent Pathway Coordinator, Cornelius Papau was in Lae to conduct proceedings which included games with the University of Technology, Malahang Technical High School, Lae Secondary School and International Training Institute – Lae campus.

“The International Students day was a first of its kind where High Performance Sport PNG as host involved tertiary institutions to be part of the celebration in Port Moresby and Lae.

“We also acknowledge the positive feedback of each participating institution and encourage others to be involved as well,” said Papau.

Papau, also the International University Sports Federation, (FISU) Oceania Regional Development Coordinator said more than 500 students attended the event in a game of basketball, volleyball, netball, mixed netball and futsal in the two regions which showed how well the event can run in the future.

He said it also a great way to unearth some talent.

“2017 looks exciting for Uni Sports in PNG and such events as ISD and IDUS are the lead up programs to a promising future for Tertiary Institutions and the PNG University Games.

“High Performance Sport PNG Talent Pathway Programs will get bigger each year and providing these great opportunities to PNG students who we believe can excel in sport,” said Papau.

Schools that have participated in the programs include Institute of Business Studies (IBS), University of  Papua New Guinea (UPNG), IEA TAFE College, Don Bosco Technological Institute (UPNG), University of Technology (UOT), Malahang Technical High School, International Training Institute (ITI) - Lae campus and Lae Secondary School.
