Call made to pay Games volunteers

Volunteers working at the 15th SP Games have asked Prime Minister Peter O'Neill to pay them for the service they are providing to the country.

Spokesperson for hundreds of volunteers who are being deployed at the BSP Stadium in Port Moresby John Bata said they were happy to be part of the historic event as the memories of the games would go a long way in their lives.

Bata said he was particularly happy with the Government for delivering  a high standard of games with internationally accredited facilities against all odds.

He said however it would be fair if the Prime Minister and his Government  paid the the volunteers for the enormous effort they were putting in to ensuring that the Games were run without any hiccups.

He said they were doing duties that police, defence, correctional services and other government officials would not do themselves given the amount of work that was required to be completed within less than two weeks.

"We are happy with the Government for delivering such a historic SP Games. Yes, we want to be part of that history......But we want to ask Prime Minister Peter O'Neill in the same manner as we are happy with the event to pay us as our request is straight forward and geniune," he said.

It is understood more than 1500 volunteers from the city ranging from workers to students are deployed at various  venues and public areas in Port Moresby to assist security staff and technical officials to ensure smooth running of the games.
