Works MOU to fix Mona highway

The Goilala District Development Authority has entered into a partnership with Department of Works to see the upgrading and maintenance of the Mona Highway.

Mona Highway, is a stretch of about 96km beginning from Aropokina junction to Tapini station.

It serves and connects the Kairuku Hiri district and Goilala District.

For Goilala, it was expected to be the most reliable link into the city. But the wet climate of the area has seen the highway, deteriorate to very poor conditions.

GDDA’s partnership with DOW will see the government body manage a continued maintenance on the road.

In turn, for every million into the GDDA account, K200 000 will be diverted directly to DOW.

To solidify this arrangement, the GDDA and DOW on Monday signed an MOU.

This occasion was witnessed by Central Province Governor Robert Agarobe and the Central Province Administrator Mei Guni Raga.

Governor Agarobe also pledged to commit K100 000 to the project.

Member for Goilala William Samb said this will be for the next 5 years of his term.

“The aim is to get the road to Tapini in a safe and travelling condition,” he said.

Based on the estimation of DOW, he says the project should cost about K2 – 3m in total.

Meantime, Samb futher called on locals to assist DOW, he also said the project will benefit locals, especially DOW’s SME program which is very user-friendly, engage local SMEs in the project.
