PNG APEC Study Centre opens today

The PNG APEC Study Centre (PNG ASC) will be officially opened today.

Papua New Guinea APEC Ambassador Ivan Pomaleu and Australian High Commissioner to

PNG, Bruce Davis, will officiate at the event at the PNG National Research Institute campus in Port

Moresby.

The PNG ASC was established with support from the PNG-Australia Partnership.

Support from the Australian government has helped to refurbish the new Centre as well as support research and policy initiatives for APEC 2018, including hosting PNG’s first APEC Study Centre Consortium Conference held on 14–15 May 2018 in Port Moresby.

“The new facilities will support applied research and policy and examine key APEC themes such as trade, energy, digitalisation and service delivery as well as promote more transparent and accountable policy in PNG and across APEC,” said Dr Osborne Sanida, Director of PNG NRI.

“PNG is now part of the APEC Study Centre Consortium with access to over 50 Study Centres. This is an opportunity we are looking forward to embracing.”

The new Centre is part of PNG NRI’s ongoing plan to modernise its current infrastructure. The refurbished facilities will help drive greater outcomes in research and policy, build stronger human capital in research in PNG, and develop PNG NRI as a leading research institute in the APEC region.
