The evolution of an ancient art

Falling a day exactly after the International Women’s Day, the annual event stands to showcase the evolution of an ancient art into modern fashion skill.

WWOMB is a two-day event hosted in Alotau to promote the diverse forms, skills and techniques of weaving and contemporary fashion.

Coinciding with the International Women's Day theme #PressforProgress, this year’s theme for the WWOMB event is #InspireToEmpower.

The event is rising up to the call to action in accelerating gender parity.

More than just mats

The province’s creativity extends from music, to art and drama, to fashion and modelling. And in turn, increasing the province’s tourism potential.

At the heart of this creativity is the traditional art and craft, which the province carefully captures through events dedicated to celebrating these.

Women Weavers of Milne Bay (WWOMB) have recently come to the spotlight, showcasing their specialised art of weaving.

It is an event that is created to provide an opening for women to showcase culture from a woman's perspective and is a platform that promotes women's traditional and modern integrity through the art of weaving.

The two day event which began yesterday in Alotau and will showcase cultural exhibitions, presentations from Milne Bay women master weavers from Milne Bay and their contribution to traditional Milne Bay Society, complimented by cultural performances, traditional food and interaction for all.
