More than just mats

Milne Bay province is not only known for its beauty, but also for its creativity potential.

The province’s creativity extends from music, to art and drama, to fashion and modelling. And in turn, increasing the province’s tourism potential.

At the heart of this creativity is the traditional art and craft, which the province carefully captures through events dedicated to celebrating these.

Women Weavers of Milne Bay (WWOMB) have recently come to the spotlight, showcasing their specialised art of weaving.

It’s an annual two-day event created and hosted by Egwalau Tours & Events Milne Bay, which focuses on the traditional skills of the rural women of Milne Bay.

The 3rd WWOMB is set to be hosted next year, 2018, from March 9 – 10.

Following the launch in November 25, 2017, preparations have commenced to host another successful event.

WWOMB also provides a platform for emerging and professional women Fashion Designers in the province to feature their creativity through a contemporary Fashion Show.

“Milne Bay women are highly skilled in the art of weaving and The WWOMB event is unique in that, it is the only event of its kind in the province specifically for women that promotes the diverse forms of Weaving, Culture and Fashion.

“This event also provides economic opportunities for rural and urban based women by exposing their craft and providing access to commercial markets for their respective products,” said Michelle Benua of Egwalau Tours & Events.
