Manus Island looks at food security to battle climate change

Mbuke is one of many islands in PNG affected by climate change and sea level rise.

Officers from Government agencies, including NARI, Department of Agriculture and Livestock and Department of Environment and Conservation, visited the island recently to speak to the locals.

They did a survey and interviews with focus groups, community leaders and women on food security and income generating activities.

The people were very happy to hear about options on income generation, women empowerment and capacity building and training.

King tide hits Manus island

Local NGO Marine Environment Awareness and Response Team, headed by former WWF Marine Officer Selarn Kaluwin, confirmed that the tide increased by 0.1 metre compared to past events.

Kaluwin said the tide has gone down however, they are monitoring the situation after sea level reached about 5 to 20 metres onshore.

However, he said the impact didn’t affect gardens and homes however, villagers are on the lookout.

“We are looking at local approaches or knowledge in terms of adaptation measures.

PNG urged to focus on mitigation and adaptation projects

GCF is a fund within the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

It was founded as a mechanism to assist developing countries in adaptation and mitigation practices to counter climate change.

GCF regional advisor to the Pacific, Coral Pasisi said there’re a wide range of criteria that countries must follow when writing up their proposals.

The four key areas around mitigation are transport, forest and land use, energy efficiency and renewable energy.

GCF to support PNG’s climate change agenda

GCF is a fund within the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

It was founded as a mechanism to assist developing countries in adaptation and mitigation practices to counter climate change.

GCF regional advisor to the Pacific, Coral Pasisi said they come in as a partner to help enable PNG to achieve those objectives and to align with the efforts of the country.

Pasisi explained that GCF is a country led process.

PNG prepares two proposals for GCF

They are the water resilient project for United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the renewable energy project under the Asian Development Bank, which is also being rolled out within the region.

GCF was established to assist developing countries finance their climate change mitigation and adaptation programs.

The proposals must be submitted to the GCF Board to undergo screening before they can be approved for funds to be released.

PNG prepares for Green Climate Fund

Over 100 participants from government and non-governmental organisations and agencies are involved in the workshop, hosted by the Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA).

GCFs’ visit to PNG is to facilitate the readiness and preparatory stage for the purposes of accessing climate finance.

GCF was established to assist developing countries finance their mitigation and adaptation programs.

The signing of the Privileges and Immunities Agreement paved the way for officials from GCF to enter PNG and work with the government.

Climate change office works to improve governance structure

Minister for Environment and Conservation, John Pundari, said in Parliament on Friday that this is a way forward for CCDA as the national designated authority for the Green Climate Fund (GCF).

GCF was established to assist developing countries finance their mitigation and adaptation programs. 

Pundari said the aim is to create a strong financial management system which meets the GCF’s requirements and standards.

He highlighted that CCDA would like to qualify to be an accredited entity, for the purpose of accessing direct finance from the Green Climate Fund.

PNG ready to implement Paris Agreement

Minister for Environment and Conservation John Pundari said this in Parliament  on Friday October 28, 2016.

Pundari said this includes the receiving of capacity building assistance, technology transfer and climate finance from developed countries.

He said this will assist in the mitigation of climate change and adaptation to the effects of climate change related to disasters in rural communities.

Climate officials to hold workshop in PNG

This was announced in Parliament on Friday October 28 by Minister for Environment and Conservation John Pundari.

GCF was established to assist developing countries finance their mitigation and adaptation programs.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration Rimbink Pato recently signed the Privileges and Immunity Agreement with Green Climate Fund (GCF) in New York, USA.

This enables PNG to secure assistance from development partners and international organisations to combat the effects of climate change.
