Authority to build pipeline of projects

The GCF is the primary financing entity for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) for the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

The CCDA, as PNG’s National Designated Authority (NDA) to GCF, has a coordinating role in linking different sectors and stakeholders with the GCF.

CCDA also facilitates access to financing to implement PNG’s climate change adaptation and mitigation priorities.

CCDA managing director Ruel Yamuna said they are working with a range of sectors and accredited entities to access GCF support.

REDD+ Strategy to be submitted to NEC this month

PNG is currently in the process of developing REDD+ for the country under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and in accordance with the 2015 Paris Agreement.

The National REDD+ Strategy was the main focus of discussions and training sessions at a workshop this week in Kavieng attended by 60 representatives from the government and private sector.

The outcomes from the workshop will be in a revised document that will help provide clear direction on how PNG can reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.

FAO committed to assist PNG with greenhouse gas inventory

The report must be completed and submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

PNG is among many countries under the UNFCCC that rectified the Paris Agreement and must report on their status on the NGHGI.

The Agriculture, Forest and Other Land Uses (AFOLU) sector is a key source of greenhouse gas emissions for PNG.

PNG prepares Forest Reference Level submission

Forest Reference Level is one of four key elements to be produced by developing countries implementing REDD+ activities.

Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) is a mechanism that has been under negotiation by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) since 2005.

It aims to mitigate climate change through reducing net emissions of greenhouse gases through enhanced forest management in developing countries, including PNG.

GCF regional advisor to the Pacific, Coral Pasisi said there’re a wide range of criteria that countries must follow when writing up their proposals.

The four key areas around mitigation are transport, forest and land use, energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Pasisi explained that GCF is a country led process.

Pacific island women show leadership at UN Climate Talks

This participation is further supported by the Women’s Delegate Fund (WDF), who undertook research resulting in the above statistics.

The WDF aims to enhance women’s participation at the UN Climate Conferences through supporting travel costs of women from Developing Countries, coupled with the coordination of a Night School to help prepare delegates for the coming negotiations as well as ongoing policy support on gender issues during the conference.
