Lae police arrest 68yo Brit

James William Wilson has been in police custody since Sunday evening following complaints from the management of Crossroads Transit Hotel at Nine-Mile.

According to acting Lae metropolitan superintendent, Commander Timothy Pomoso, the British man has been charged with one count of false pretence under the criminal code act.

He said the man owes the hotel a total of K37,880.50.

He had checked in on the 13th of August and left without payment. He then tried to check into another guest house at Eriku when police caught up with him.

Lawyers to seek stay on PM’s arrest

This was made known in court today after the National Court dismissed the case challenging the legality of the arrest warrant that was taken out against the Prime Minister in June 2014.

With the dismissal of the judicial review case and dismissal of the stay orders preventing the arrest, it now means that police can execute that arrest on the PM.

Director of the National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate, Matthew Damaru, said the onus is now on Police Commissioner Gari Baki to act on the warrant.

ENB man charged with bribery

Provincial police commander, Joseph Tabali, told Loop PNG that the local was caught bribing residents to vote for his candidate.

“The culprit was escorted to the mainland Kokopo Police Station on Sunday with ballot boxes,” says the PPC.

“This was a first-of-its-kind incident for the province.”

Apart from the arrest, no major happenings have been reported.

Meanwhile, Tabali says polling ended on Saturday (July 1) for the Gazelle and Rabaul electorates, while Kokopo and Pomio on Monday.

​Another officer arrested over alleged funds misuse

Project coordinator of the Manus Provincial Government, Simon Pondrilei, was arrested last week Thursday, June 1, and charged with Abuse of Public Office and Official Corruption.

Pondrilei, who is 61 years old, is from Tilienu village, Rambutso, Rapatona LLG, Lorengau, Manus.

He was arrested and charged by the Port Moresby Fraud Squad team in Manus following investigations.

Manus Police Provincial Police Commander, Chief Inspector David Yapu, said he was later released on K1000 bail and he is to appear in the Lorengau District Court today.

​Soldier arrested for sexual assault

The 21-year-old from Mendi, Southern Highlands Province, was arrested last week. He was charged with two counts of sexual penetration.

It is alleged he sexually assaulted a 14 year-old girl on two occasions between April and May 2017.

Manus Provincial Police Commander, Chief Inspector David Yapu, told Loop PNG he was caught red-handed on the second alleged occasion by families of the victim.

A complaint placed at the police station led to his arrest.

The man is currently in police custody and is expected in court next Monday.

Arrested for allegedly chopping off woman’s hand

The accused, Kanah Pahun, from Yiringou village in the Lelemadih-Bupi Chupei LLG, Lorengau District, Manus, was arrested and charged for unlawful wounding on Monday this week.

Police allege he chopped off a woman’s left hand on Friday, March 3, following an argument.

Pahun was apprehended by the local community and handed over to police. He is expected to appear at the Lorengau District Court today.

Justice in sight for Late Morove

Felix Kange, the husband of the Late Morove, was arrested and charged this morning for involuntary manslaughter (murder).

Kange is currently detained at the Waigani police cell and has been refused bail by police.

NCD police commander Sylvester Kalaut told Loop PNG that for now, Kange’s lawyers will have to apply for bail at the National Court.

The late Morove was shot in the back of the head with a gun on May 14 and died instantly. 

Police arrest youths for drugs and homebrew

The 17-year-old was spotted by a police unit outside the Boroko NasFund office area this morning.

The teen will be questioned at the station.

Meantime, another youth, aged 16, was also caught around the Yakapilin secondhand area this morning.

The youth, from Tari, was allegedly under the influence of homebrew and was harassing vendors at the market area.

Both youths are at the Hohola station.

Prime suspects in nursing school rape arrested

Three suspects were arrested in a raid at Banana camp settlement in Lae on Sunday, in relation to the rape and robbery of two female students at the Angau School of Nursing.
