SMEC to study garment and textile sector

The main objective of the study is to cut down on the import bill and produce quality clothing to meet the local demand.

First Assistant Secretary for Trade Division of the Department of Trade, Commerce and Industry, Richard Yakam, revealed this during the 27th Garment and Textile Training 27th Graduation in Port Moresby today.

“We hope that the study will recommend for appropriate policy support and incentives to grow the garment and textile industry in the country.

Over K1b potential in garment and textile sector

And with a growing population, the industry is expected to grow to well over K3 billion in the next 10 – 20 years.

Speaking on behalf of the SME Corporation, Manager Corporate Services Division, Rodney Somale, said the industry is a sleeping giant that has a potential value in billions of kina.

He said this value was leaving the shores through foreign owned garment companies, while pacific neighbors such as Fiji were exporting to PNG.

Somale was speaking to the graduating students of the SME Corporations 27th Garment and Textile Training Program.
