PNG in need of sign language interpreters

Sign language educator Rose Launch said the challenge for many hearing impaired people is that their rights are denied due to limited number of interpreters.

Launch teaches at the Red Cross Special Education Resource Centre stressing that the interpreters in the country are mostly teachers.

“When we have time to give them service, we do but if we don’t then they’re denied from their rights but we try our best to give them service.

“I appeal to government departments to look into your policy to include people with special needs into the policies.”

Sign language to be used first time on TV news

The pilot project will be launched on NBC TV, an initiative of the Department for Community Development, Youth and Religion (DFCDYR).

It is anticipated that the sign language can be utilised using all forms of media, with support from the government and donor partners.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Monday between DFCDYR and NBC.

DFCDYR, in partnership with the National Gaming and Control Board, through the O’Neill/Dion government, has allocated funds to cater for the sign language specialists to appear on TV news time.
