Experienced striker Guerrero, who was only allowed to play in the tournament after the captains of Peru's World Cup opponents petitioned FIFA to temporarily lift his 14-month suspension for a failed drug test, made the most of what may have been his final appearance for Los Incas, who finished with three points to add to the many plaudits they have earned in Russia.

Their opener would have been worthy of winning any World Cup match, Andre Carrillo volleying Guerrero's weighted cross into the net to the unbridled joy of the raucous Peru fans packing the stands in Sochi.

Peru captain cleared for World Cup

The Swiss Federal Tribunal said in a statement on Friday (NZ time) that the 34-year-old would suffer "if he saw himself prevented from participating in a competition that will be the culmination of his career as a footballer, given that he did not act intentionally or with significant negligence."

Guerrero is now free to lead his country in their first World Cup appearance for 36 years. They face France, Australia and Denmark in Group C at the finals which start on June 14.

Floods, mudslides kill dozens in Peru after unusually heavy rainfalls

Stunned residents watched and filmed on mobile phone cameras as Evangelina Chamorro escaped after being swept into an avalanche of mud, wood debris and farm animals, about 53 kilometres south of downtown Lima.

Ms Chamorro, 32, had just dropped her two daughters at school and was feeding her pigs alongside her husband when they were pulled into a landslide.

Armando Rivera, Ms Chamorro's husband, told RPP radio they climbed a tree but the trunk broke.

They held on to each other's hands but Ms Chamorro eventually lost her grip and got separated.
