Leukaemia is a cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow where blood cells are made.

The 12, who are actually members of a mentorship group called Winged Mentorship and Empowerment Agency (MEA), will climb to raise funds, to support PNG’s Cecilia Ali Leukaemia Foundation (CALF).

Led by Mary Handen, the group will leave Port Moresby on August 26, spend a day at the base camp and climb on Saturday, August 28.

According to the fact sheet provided by the Leukaemia Foundation in Australia, this is equivalent to eight people every day.

Leukaemia is a cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow where blood cells are made.

There are four main types: Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML); Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL); Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML); and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL).

Twelve –year-old Jedrick Moale from PNG lost his battle to leukaemia in April 30, 2014. He had been diagnosed in February with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia a high risk one.
