Sports Tok Sevens kicks off

The first-ever Sports Tok Easter Sevens went into action today with 28 teams doing battle at Bava Park, Port Moresby.

There are 24 men’s teams and four women’s teams taking part in the two-day event. Teams taking part include Harlequins, Juggernauts, Crusaders, Brothers and Baike Brothers.

Three teams from outside centres also made the trip into the nation’s capital to participate: PNG Highlanders, MadGauns and Black Orchids.

Tournament coordinator, Paul Joseph, said: “We have six pools of four teams for the men’s and one pool of four teams for the women’s.

“All teams will play three games each today and after the last matches we will rank the teams from 1-24.

“Teams placed from 1-8 will qualify for the Cup, teams from 9-16 for the Plate and 17-24 will play off for the Bowl.”

The finals will be held tomorrow.

“You have to win to go all the way. There will be no second chances regardless if you top your pool after the matches today. So all in all, teams playing in the finals will have played six games.”

He said there is K20,000 in prize money to be won.

Men’s:

Cup- K5,000, Runner up- K3,000

Plate- K2,500, Runner up- K2,000

Bowl- K1,500, Runner up- K1,000

Women’s:

Winner- K1, 200, Runner up- K800
