PNG Games: Pioneer para athlete retires

Representing Team Morobe at the BSP 7th PNG Games, this athlete will be exiting the Paralympic arena after 33 years.

He made an 'honour lap' around the track at the Sasi Stadium during today's Paralympic presentation.

It was a form of farewell to the sport that he will be retiring from after spending half of his life committed to developing it.

Tuwara said the reason for his exit was to mentor and allow younger para athletes to have a chance of showcasing their special abilities.

“It is not easy to look after us, but for most of us, it is the unconditional love of our parents that keeps us going and pushes us to explore our full potential despite our defects,” Tuwara said.

He thanked the PNG Sports Federation and the National Sports Institute of Goroka for the vision and foresight in having faith in para sports and for drawing up the games charter to introduce this sport that has changed the lives of so many athletes.

He acknowledged New Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan for allowing Kumul 1 to transport trainers in presentation for the first para sport event when he was prime minister.

“His political intervention and support was a morale boost for our sport," he said.

Tuwara aims to motivate and mentor young and upcoming para athletes and will stick to table tennis after retiring.
