Gaidi crowned netball champs

Gaidi were crowned netball champions of the Papaka Sports Association Cup, Central Province, after a crushing 42-29 win over Nuavi last night.

It was a tight opening quarter, with both sides levelled at 10-10.

The second quarter saw the skies open up at the Papaka Sports Oval, testing both sides’ ability to adapt to playing in cold and rainy conditions.

But it was the Gaidi girls who capitalised on the opportunity as they began to slowly take the lead from Nuavi.

By halftime, Gaidi had pushed to the front to lead 20-14.

Buoyed on by their supporters, the Gaidi shooters in Safiti Jack and Tau Rawali proved hard to stop as they kept the scoreboard ticking to take their side to 29-17 at the end of the third quarter.

Nuavi’s shooters Herea Tegana and Ope Richard, on the other hand, were given little opportunity to the credit of Gaidi’s solid defence.

It proved too easy for Gaidi, who ran away with the score in the final quarter with consistent centre Eileen Gapi allowing the ball to flow down to Jack and Rawali, who continued piling on the points to seal the win.

Gaidi picked up K500 in prize money while Nuavi settled for K200.

6 netball teams took part in the Papaka Sports Association Cup that started during Christmas of last year and ended last night.
