REDD+ Strategy validation workshop on this week

A validation workshop on the National REDD+ Strategy will get underway this week in Port Moresby, hosted by the Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA).

REDD+ stands for countries' efforts to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and foster conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks.

The workshop, scheduled on Wednesday, March 29, will highlight the National Forest Monitoring System Action Plan, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory and Forest Reference Level for REDD+ in PNG.

The Government of Papua New Guinea (GoPNG), under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Paris Climate Change Agreement, has been developing the strategy.

The strategy is on REDD+, including sustainable forest management, conservation of carbon stocks and enhancement of carbon stocks (REDD+) for the period of 2017-2027.

The global mechanism on REDD+, promoted by PNG, and included within the Paris Climate Change Agreement, provides PNG with the opportunity to have its contributions to the global fight against climate change internationally recognised and supported.

This strategy marks a major step in this process, and a further landmark in PNG’s action on climate change.

It also lays out the country’s approach for achieving action towards REDD+ over the coming decade and presents an approach that is cross sectoral.

The workshop will bring together stakeholders from government, private sector and civil society to create a transformational change in the way that we manage and protect our forest resources.

This is part of a broader approach to green climate compatible development.
