More awareness on guns needed in Hela

Hela Gimbu Association wants the disciplinary forces engaged in the Hela call-out security operations to be actively involved in doing community awareness.

HGA deputy chairman, Habia Babe said a massive awareness covering all of Hela Province about the effects of protecting the guns culture will help encourage people to surrender their illegal guns to authorities.

He added that 95 per cent of people in the province are peace loving people and only a minority are creating the law and order problems.

Babe, thank the government for the deployment of RPNG and PNGDF personnel and urged the involvement of Hela PPC Luke Wally and his personnel because they have local knowledge and experience of the lawlessness in the resource rich province.

Meanwhile, the official launching of the Hela call-out security operation happened on Monday in Tari town with the key message of surrendering illegal firearms whilst working together with Security Forces to restore law and order, and retaining peace in the province.

The amnesty period for surrounding of unlicensed weapons is on 28th of February.  

The National Government have promised K11 million for the security operations in the province that houses the multi-billion LNG project.
