Local communities vital in project proposal formulation

Local communities in Papua New Guinea are vital in the process of preparing project proposals in sustainable forest management.

This was discussed during a workshop to build capacity on project design in sustainable forest management in PNG underway in Port Moresby.

The five-day workshop commenced on Monday, February 6 and is being conducted by the United Nations Forum on Forest (UNFF) in collaboration with the PNG Forest Authority (PNGFA).

Workshop facilitator from UNFF, the sustainable development officer Benjamin Singer Productive said they’ve had very positive discussion so far.

Singer said the successful discussions have been on building capacity of the PNGFA and related partners in formulating project proposals on sustainable forest management.

“We’ve had a very productive discussion, not only on the specific issues that the forest sector is facing today, but also in terms of learning about the building blocks of how to prepare a project proposal.

“So far, we’ve looked at stakeholder involvement.

“We’ve looked at how to reach out to different stakeholders and to  local communities and take their views into account when preparing project proposals,” Singer said.

The workshop is also being attended by officers from Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) and Climate Change Development Authority (CCDA).
