PNG fashion team returns from runway

The PNG Fashion and Design Week team have returned from Sydney today.

The fashion body introduced PNG's bilum meri, Florence Jaukae Kamel, to the Pacific Fashion International Runway last Saturday.

The JFK collection was the winner from the PNG Fashion and Design Week 2017 early this month.

In true PNG fashion, JFK showcased the bilum dresses on this platform.

"While everyone came with printed fabric and other styles, I brought PNG bilum, hand twisted and woven. This is another opportunity I'm proud of," she said.

Also on the runway were two more local designs - the Baiwa brand by Natasha Tamanabae and PNGean Kala by Sarah Todd.

Todd is a common name on this runway.

She pioneered the runway itself with Faye Lapou Peni. And since then, she has been showcasing her designs there for three years now.

Natasha was the 2016 PNG Fashion Week designer and took part on the runway last year.

The two designers participated individually.

"We just wanted to showcase PNG on that level...and we all did well," said Todd.

She said the show itself was described as "refreshing" by an Australian magazine.

Also from PNG to the runway was model Andrea Yuki.

She is the first model from the local runway to be selected to walk the international runway.

"Everything else was same, but walking in PNG design, representing my country in another country was something different. I had tears in my eye before going on stage," said Yuki.

The team was accompanied by Janet Sios, founder, and Christopher Lam, CEO.

Sios said the team has bigger plans for 2018.
