Craig David: 'I'm back in my lane again'

Fans of Craig David have been talking about his big comeback since his latest album went to number one.

Now, ahead of his new album, The Time Is Now, the 36-year-old tells Newsbeat "I'm back in my lane again".

The music will be released in January 2018 and features collaborations with Bastille, JP Cooper and Kaytranada.

He's been reflecting on his musical memories and how he sees his career as a journey.

Craig was at number one last year, the first time since 2002, and he also played Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage this year.

So what's it like to be back at the top of his game?

"I live music and it's a journey," he says. "I came out the blocks with number ones and a career that's allowed me to have an amazing career.

"There's always going to albums that do better than others but to have Following My Intuition go to number one with a whole new generation of followers, was like wow."

As Radio 1 celebrates its 50th birthday, Craig has certainly got a few music memories to pull out of the bag.

"Back then my Saturdays were all about Tim Westwood doing his thing and listening to Trevor Nelson on the radio and back when he was doing MTV show The Lick and all those great things.

"When I heard You Make Me Wanna, I was like 'who is this Usher guy?' That took me on a tangent of what I was going to go with my career.

"I vividly remember hearing Rosie Gaines Closer Than Close for the first time. It was back in 1998 when they were doing those garage nation mix-tape packs."

The station has also helped with the new album and some collaborations.

"I met Dan from Bastille for the first time on Grimmy's breakfast show.

"We said we've got to get in the studio at some point. Finally when we made it happen, the song that came out of it, a song called I Know You which is on the new album is more than I could have imagined."
