Teens convicted for armed robbery

Four teenagers were found guilty by the Waigani National Court this week for robbing three women near the Kone Tigers oval at Waigani on Jan 5,2015.

The four teenagers who were Primary schools students at the time of the offense were convicted by Justice George Manuhu after they pleaded to the court over the offense.

From Chimbu, Southern Highlands and Eastern Highlands provinces, the four aged 18 and 16 years of age were sentenced to two years in prison.

That sentence was however, suspended because they had severed one year, nine months and a week in custody at Bomana prior to the sentencing this week.

The teenagers on Jan 5 last year held up Belinda, Molinda Dongme and Miriam Songa at gun point and stole properties including mobile phones, bank cards including K313 cash.

This took place along a short cut road leading to the Morata bus stop at Waigani.

Justice Manuhu told the four teens that there must be respect for the female population adding the country is fed up of the type of crime they committed against the three women.

“Stealing from others and receiving stolen property is not a good thing and it’s not a good crime as you have discovered. Many of you come to court and show that you are harmless but when you are outside you become very violent by stealing from others and threatening them with very offensive weapons.” Justice Manuhu said.

He warned them that the penalty will not be the same for them if they re-offend.
