Symposium vital for free health care implementation

The upcoming nurses’ symposium is vital to equip nurses in Papua New Guinea with up-to-date knowledge and skills to help implement the Government’s free health care policy.

The 13th annual PNG Nurses Symposium, from October 10-14 in Lae, will enable nurses to gain substantial knowledge in the ever changing trends in the medical field.

The theme, “Nurses: A force for change, improving and strengthening health system’s resilience through public private partnership”, is in line with the free health care policy.

PNGNA acting vice president Fredrick Kebai said nurses are agents of change and implementers of policies.

“Free health services are a big task which the Government has put before us.

“With the limited number of health workers, we have to really know what our weaknesses are and really tackle it so that at the end of the day, we should deliver the government’s policy.

“We also need to have confident, well-informed leaders who understand their role in developing a workforce to meet new challenges,” he said.

Kebai added that although much has been done to develop strong health systems, it seems that it is not the whole answer.

He said the goal for successful health systems is to be able to adapt, learn and be flexible, which are fundamental to building and developing resiliency.
