Social media outrage over school yard rape

Social media users are enraged by what appears to be a school yard rape by students in one Central Province School recorded on mobile phone video.

Last night the video was posted on Facebook and shared multiple times by Papua New Guinean youths especially until it caught the attention of many more that cared enough to demand its removal on Facebook and report it to police.

Radio personality, Rosemarie Botong raised the alarm on her Facebook page, expressing disgust, shame, fear and helplessness and later tagged police and media personnel.

LOOP PNG has been sent a copy of the 47 sec video which shows at least four male students either standing or squatting over a female student.

A fifth person took the video with Central police indicating today the incident may have happened “about four weeks ago.’’

Central Province Police Commander, Laimo Asi is understood to have assigned detectives to investigate the incident where a female is being held in a compromising position by the males, one has his hand over her mouth to prevent her screaming while another violates her.

The incident takes place in an area covered by bush and shrubbery, that too a subject of interest for police.

Police say at the time of the incident, there were two other females and five males all from the same school (named).

Police have also established that this group of students were drunk at the time.

The matter was never reported to police by the school Principal.

Students who feared for their safety reported the matter to Kwikila Police this week and a team of police are understood to have visited the school soon after.

PPC Laimo Asi could not be reached for comment.

Call and text messages to the school Principal were not returned nor acknowledged.

Social media users called for the arrest of the individual that posted the video online, and for the quick identification and arrest of the male students.

There is disgust, hurt and anger amongst the public on the incident.
