On run for 24 years, wife killer recaptured

A convicted prisoner was arrested for wilful murder after two decades of being on the run.

The prisoner, 40 years old from Malalaua in the Gulf province, was charged, with three other accomplices, including the husband of the dead woman.

The prisoners, including the husband, were convicted in 1998 for a 1991 wilful murder.

The recaptured suspect, while on bail, absconded and went into hiding - for 24 years.

According to police reports, the victim was the wife of a police sergeant, who was murdered by these three prisoners after colluding with her husband.

The National Court in Port Moresby found all of them guilty and sentenced the three to 8 years while the husband was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Coincidentally, the offence was committed during the SP Games in Papua New Guinea, hosted by both Port Moresby and Lae in 1991.

And the prisoner was arrested last week after the Pacific Games returned to Port Moresby.

The prisoner was arrested and transferred to Bomana Prison last week.
