Positive comments for PNG murals overseas

There has been a lot of positive comments from the public overseas where Papua New Guinea murals are showcased.

English artist Dale Grimshaw, who has painted these murals throughout the United Kingdom and Sweden, said the response he gets from the public is pretty amazing.

The murals show the faces of PNG men dressed in colorful traditional attire mainly from the Highlands Region.

His PNG murals have mainly been spread across the UK in places like London, Bristol and Cardiff.

Grimshaw has never lived in PNG but has a friend who visited the country and was inspired by the photographs and imagery.

Grimshaw said he tries to paint these particular images with feeling and passion that makes it hard for people to be negative.

He loves the idea that people can be walking down a street in London and just bump into these painted characters from PNG and he likes that blunt contrast of the two worlds colliding.

“I sometimes got the "oh are they cannibals?" type of comment off a few people which was a bit of a shock at first because I have never connected it with that kind of negativity or those thoughts.

“I often get messages of support from people from PNG but also from people living in other places like Australia.

“People seem very pleased and proud that I am promoting their culture on the other side of the world.

“People can see the works have been a labour of love and can really appreciate them Onwards and upwards,” Grimshaw said.

Grimshaw was due to travel to PNG and paint and carry out some workshops a while back but had issues with funding.
