NCD tops country’s accident statistics

The National Capital District has the highest number of vehicle accidents in the country.

National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) CEO, Nelson Terema, revealed today at the launch of the Puma Energy road safety campaign.

In previous years, NCD registered 9,947 accidents, Morobe 3,388, Western Highlands 2,170, Eastern Highlands 1,772, Madang 1, 479, East New Britain 1,325 and Enga 1,180.

He added that NRSA’s road safety provincial awareness is targeting these seven provinces because they are classified as ‘high risk’.

Meanwhile, officer-in-charge of Port Moresby Police Traffic, Philip Koliadi, echoed the message of being responsible in avoiding motor vehicle accidents.

“This is everyone’s responsibility; the drivers, owners, passengers and pedestrians,” Inspector Koliadi said.

“If you are drinking (alcohol), give your vehicle to another person to drive, pedestrians must use the crossing to cross the road.”

He added that in a day, Police Traffic attend to a maximum of 10 -15 reported accidents in Port Moresby.

A Grade 11 student from Badihagwa secondary, Beaty Movi, called on relevant authorities to tighten the road safety laws.

She asked for all unworthy vehicles on the road to be removed, with speed limits in the city to be effectively enforced and breathalysers to test drivers’ alcohol volumes as ways to decrease the chances of accidents happening.
