HP Sport staff co-facilitate first ever course for Oceania

The PNG Sports Foundation’s High Performance Sport is currently co-facilitating an Oceania Sports Education Program (OSEP) Strength & Conditioning (S&C) course in Fiji.

High Performance Sport S&C coordinator, Thereseanne Daimol and coach Hannah Ilave left the country last week to trial their skills learnt as educators during the recently completed OSEP courses.

Daimol is by far the only individual in country that has completed a Human Movement Degree, and is working in the sporting industry.

Ilave on the other hand is currently the longest standing S&C coach with HP, minus Toua Kohu who has moved on to the Hunters program, and Boudie who is now doing gym supervision.

Ilave has 'worn many hats' in her time with HP as she is an extremely versatile individual.

“It’s exciting but it’s a lot of responsibility and pressure to deliver.

“Myself and Tee (Theresanne) as the educators will be co facilitating this S&C course which is the first that OSEP has delivered.

“This is the sort of their (OSEP) trial run to review the first two outside of Fiji to be able to run the course,” said Ilave.

Daimol said all the assessments run through this course is competency based meaning it will prove whether both women will be able to demonstrate that they can facilitate these S&C courses.

“We must be capable to provide effective coaching or teach how to coach a coach. So it is not the same as coaching an athlete.

“Just this previous thing that we did in the Educators course taught us a few things.

“Like the way we have been up-skilling new staff which allowed us to see small changes we can make in our workplace,” said Daimol.

HP Sport Director Aaron Alsop said that Daimol and Ilave’s participation at the event will also lead to HP Sport developing an S&C module for OSEP to use in other Pacific countries.
