Big year predicted for weightlifting

Weightlifters in the Oceania Region including Papua New Guinea have a big year ahead with major events lined up.

These include the 2016 Olympic Games which will be held at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in August.

It will be another action-packed year starting in March with the Australian Open International to be held in Brisbane.

Elite athletes training at the Oceania Weightlifting Institute will be selected to represent the region and their country.

In May, there will be the Oceania Championships for Senior, Junior and Youth & Olympic Qualification Event in Suva, Fiji.

Then there will be the Elite Training Camp in June, the Olympic Games in Rio and the Commonwealth Championships in October at Penang, Malaysia.

Oceania Weightlifting Federation general secretary and regional coach Paul Coffa says they’re looking forward to this year and there will be many other regional tournaments throughout the year.

Coffa congratulated Guam Weightlifting for organising the first Micronesian Cup in December. The 2016 Micronesian Cup will be held in Guam on September 17.
