Workers want new Kumul Telikom board

The PNG Communication Workers Union has issued a three-point resolution asking the Government to replace the current Kumul Telikom board and chairman.

Following a meeting on Thursday, the PNGCWU and Telikom staff presented the resolutions to a representative of the Minster for Public Enterprise & State Investment, William Duma.

The resolutions presented are as follows:

The Union with its members, staff and management of Telikom PNG Ltd, demand:

  1. Minister Duma immediately remove Mahesh Patel as chairman based on the submission the Union presented to Duma on November 27th 2017;
  2. The new Kumul Telikom board be appointed by Minister Duma immediately; and
  3. The Minister institute an immediate investigation into the conduct and micro-managing of Telikom PNG Ltd by Patel in line with Ombudsman Commission (OC) letter to Patel dated 13th November 2017 with intent to investigate him.

The resolution signed by PNGCWU president, Nug Mamtirin, and general secretary Geoffrey Borari, on behalf of members and workers, demands immediate attention.

The Union has been against the appointment of Patel as Telikom chairman since his appointment in 2012.

They claim Patel does not have the qualifications and have alleged malpractise and conspiracy by the chairman in his handling of Telikoms affairs.

Patel has previously stated that the accusations are by people with vested interests and there is a lot of misinformation being circulated.
