A busy weekend for sports in Port Moresby

The much-anticipated Seventh Edition of Niu Power Sports Tok Rugby Sevens Tournament will be a must watch event this weekend.

The event is already shaping to be a great rugby fest with 32 men's teams, 12 women and junior teams competing for K85000 cash prize money in total. The event commences tomorrow at Bava.

PNG women’s volleyball win opener

In the first match up, Tahiti beat Samoa 2019 Pacific Games silver medallists American Samoa 3-1.

In the afternoon’s next clash, PNG and Solomon Islands played out a thrilling five-set encounter with PNG edging the home side 3 sets to 2. PNG won the first two sets 25-18, 25-12 before Solomon Islands came back strongly to avoid a white wash to win the next two 25-18, 25-19. PNG held on to win 15-12 in the fifth set.

Volleyball progresses in youth games

The tournament brought some excitement to Volleyball fans but bad weather conditions affected the first (Tuesday, September 26) day of the tournament.

Volleyball Tournament Director Andrew Ikufu said the code had completed 1O round of matches. He said, although the event is running well, there is still a long way to go. The volleyball teams are expected to play 36 round of matches; 10 of which have been played.

In the women's cup category finals, Kinas Bank triumphs amidst fierce rivalry. The match between Kina Bank and Parliament women last weekend set the arena ablaze with their pursuit of victory. In a gripping encounter, Kina Bank emerged victorious, securing a 3-1 win. Their relentless efforts have now earned them a coveted spot in the grand final on 27th August 27. 

Thrilling battles in POM corporate volleyball finals

The competition has been intense and the four top teams are all set to battle it out for a spot in the grand final.

The match between NCDC and Dentons is being termed the clash of titans. 

NCDC, led by former PNG Volleyball Amoa setter, Gia Kapa aka Tuvi, will be looking to set the pace and precision for his hitmen of Team City. Backed up by Arthur Patrick, the hitmen, including Allen Lawes, Eddie Aisi Jnr, and Jimmy Wazzu, will seek to overpower Team Dentons with their smashing attacks.

Gomore Volleyball tournament

The tournament saw eight women’s and 9 men’s teams that started in March, ending last weekend.

The purpose of this community sport is to get back the love of the game of volleyball and to see the change in the behaviour of the village youths. 

There were two divisions, male and female, with the women having eight teams while the men had nine teams. In the men’s division, the Expendables and Delight Power battled to get the winning trophy, while in the women’s division, it was Neighbours and the White Rose teams who contested.

Referee clinic on Watom Island

The island LLG kick started its sports competition in April to encourage residents and youths to take part in various codes to stay healthy and fit.

More than 30 participants and officials for the codes of rugby touch 6s and volleyball attended the one-day referee clinic conducted on Thursday May 18.

The Community Development Sector of the Rabaul District Administration conducted the clinic with the assistance of the ENB Rugby Touch Association to assist in upskilling the participants’ knowledge on the laws of the code.

Yamano Cup scout potential players

Thirty-six (36) teams within the Yamano tribe in Ambunti participated in the competition – 20 teams in men’s soccer and 16 teams for women’s volleyball. The competition took place between 5th and 12th January.

The games were played at the Kumbawei Sports grounds.

President of Yamano Sports Association Solomon Aplas said the games ended on a high note with potential players selected to participate in the District this September.

'Wilson' volleyball head from Cast Away film sold for $308,000

The film depicts Tom Hanks as a lone survivor stuck on a deserted island. The ball, which his character names Wilson, is depicted as his only friend.

The ball was originally made to look dirty, and spent a lot of time in the water during filming, according to Prop Store, the auction house that sold it.

Hanks was given an Oscar nomination for best actor in the Robert Zemeckis film.

The movie star lost out to Russell Crowe for his role in the film Gladiator.

During the film, Hanks talks to Wilson as a way to keep his sanity while struggling to survive.

Sports facility for St Anne’s

These are the words of the Principal of St Anne’s Primary School, when acknowledging Bank South Pacific Financial Limited during the handover of a newly constructed multi-purpose basket and volleyball courts to the school, in Port Moresby.

Sr Mary said, “The addition of the new multi-purpose courts makes the location the perfect place for our 248 students to get outdoors to participate in recreation, exercise and sports.”
