PNG starts to experience wet season

The PNG National Weather Service has reported that PNG is now into the north-west monsoon season which normally starts from November to April.

Weather forecaster Leo Hawarri said the country will expect heavy rainfall in the coming weeks especially in the Momase and Southern Region.

He said the wet season will prolong until April next year, however the monsoon season won’t be as effective unlike in past years due to climate change.

Seasonal outlook vital for climate framework

Seasonal outlooks are released monthly to summarise climate outlooks for the next three months.

PNG has been made a focus country to implement the climate services framework.

PNG National Weather Service (NWS) director Samuel Maiha says there’s a great need to establish weekly, monthly and seasonal outlooks in order to implement the climate services framework.

Maiha said due to that, they’ve been having issues trying to progress with the framework.

Maiha: More to do on weather and climate change

PNG National Weather Service director Samuel Maiha says PNG has a long way to go in making social and economic sense of climate services with the change in climate.

The average global temperature change for the first three months of 2016 was 1.48°C, essentially equaling the 1.5°C warming threshold agreed to by COP 21 negotiators in Paris last December.

Maiha said the increase of 1.5 degree Celsius will give the NWS the first guess of what to expect this coming monsoon season.

Framework for climate services vital for PNG

This is part of a Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS) in which PNG has been made a focus country to implement the framework.

GFCS aims to enable society to better manage the risks and opportunities arising from climate change, especially for those who are most vulnerable to such risks.

GFCS covers five priority areas namely energy, agriculture and food security, water, health and disaster risk reduction.

New weather system will improve PNG’s aviation industry

The new upgraded system, launched this week by NWS in Port Moresby, is a powerful tool for tracking analysis of high quality accurate weather forecast in PNG.

Weather forecasters will be able to receive data faster in 10 minutes intervals unlike in the past when the old system provided data hourly.

Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) PNG chief operating officer Captain Tom Waqa the new equipment will provide massive improvements as far as aviation, weather forecasting and reporting is concerned.
