Fire services to be improved in major cities

Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, announced in parliament today that the Government is working to improve the National Fire Service to better respond to fires.

 

DSIP to continue until Return of Writs

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill revealed this in parliament today after he was asked by the member for Kavieng, Ben Micah to explain, as many assumed that an Mp’s term in parliament ends at the issue of writs.

Micah also sought answers from the prime minister on Section 27 of the Ombudsman Commission act that calls for all project funds to be frozen until after elections in order to avoid abuse.

Government to introduce better pension system for ex-servicemen

Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, gave the assurance today at the 2017 Leaders’ Summit in Port Moresby.

He told the leaders at the summit that service men and women must be given priority and maintain discipline in the force.

“Our men and women must know that we have taken a hardline approach and that is ‘one strike and you’re out’.

“There must be no compromise in the forces.”

He said the government has been administering this policy and improvements have been taking place within the forces.

APEC Haus to be a world class museum

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill made the announcement today at the 2017 Leader’s Summit in Port Moresby.

He said the museum will help Papua New Guinea children know the history of the country and other neighboring countries.

The construction of the APEC Haus had begun on the reclaimed land at Ela Beach.

It is being undertaken by Oil Search Ltd through a tax credit scheme approved by the National Executive Council.

O’ Neill said the building will be the focus for global attention during APEC, and will be a national icon that will be used by generations to come.

Large number of companies not paying tax

Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, said the government is aware of such companies and will soon be dealing with them appropriately.

When officially opening the 2017 Leaders’ Summit this morning in Port Moresby, O’Neill said such companies are not needed in the country.

He told the leaders that to eradicate such problems, they need to engage with businesses and companies to fight such illegal companies.

Governor for Oro, Garry Juffa, has also raised this issue many times and called for tax exemptions review in the country.

Challenging term of Parliament, says O’Neill

O’Neill made the statement today when officially opening the 2017 Leaders’ Summit in Port Moresby.

He said although many criticisms and other negative and bad comments have been raised agains them, his government has never failed its commitment in serving the people.

“We developed a core set of policies and commitments to our nation and were very busy implementing them.

“We never promise to take everybody to the moon, but to improve lives of so many people and our children.”

O’Neill officially opens 2017 Leaders’ Summit

The Summit brought together national, provincial and local level governments, government department and statutory agencies heads and commodity boards, as well as private sector bodies and development partners.

The annual event provides a forum for Provincial and Districts level leaders to present reports on achievements and disappointments experienced at all Government levels.

The Summit is an initiative of the current coalition government led by O’Neill since taking office in 2012.

National strategy on Gender Based Violence to be launched

The strategy aims to strengthen the work on GBV in order to achieve zero-tolerance towards GBV by 2025 and as per PNG Vision 2050.

The GBV Strategy was endorsed by the National Executive Council on December 15.

Minister for Community Development, Youth and Religion Delilah Gore said the strategy does not reinvent structures and processes.

The GBV strategy builds on existing interventions at national and sub-national level to secure government ownership and a stronger focus on coordination and monitoring for quality.

Gabadi landowners concerned about PNGDF relocation

 Gabadi community spokesperson Java Beraro said there are three issues that need to be addressed in this Manumanu land deal including the relocation of the barracks.

Beraro said there has never been any consultation with the locals to find out the effects of having a PNGDF barracks near the village communities.

 “The COI needs to investigate and the perpetrators of this land grabbing scheme must be answerable.

“It has to be done today, if it’s not done today, when can it be done?

MSG chairman says talks in PNG fruitful

Mr Sogavare, who is also Solomon Islands' prime minister, met with his PNG counterpart Peter O'Neill in the last leg of his consultations with MSG leaders.

It's his second and final such tour since taking up the chairmanship of the sub-regional grouping in 2015.

Regarding West Papua, the Chair confirmed with Mr O'Neill that an application for full MSG membership by the United Liberation Movement of West Papua would be dealt with under revised MSG Membership criteria.
