UNDP urges PNG to protect its biodiversity

World Environment Day is the biggest annual event for positive environmental action around the globe and takes place on 5 June every year. The theme for this year's celebration is 'connecting people with nature'.

"Papua New Guinea is home to some of the most spectacular natural environment in the world. Although the country makes up less than one percent of the global land area, it contains more than seven percent of the world's biodiversity," said Roy Trivedy, UNDP Resident Representative and the UN Resident Coordinator in Papua New Guinea (PNG).

PNG inadequately protected

This is the reality, even though PNG has ratified the UN Convention on Biological Diversity and has committed to protecting 17 percent of terrestrial area, and 10 percent of marine areas by 2020.

UN coordinator raises concern on importance of environment

He praised residents for joining in on the World Environment Day celebrations today at the Port Moresby Nature Park.

This day has been recognised annually by the UN since 1974.

And Trivedy said being the fourth mega diverse region in the whole world, it was great for PNG to observe the day.

“People’s lives here connect with nature and it’s great to see so many young and old people and business houses,” he said, making mention of some like the Kreativ Kanaka and Total Waste Management.

PNG prepares for potential El Nino occurrence

A two-day workshop is underway in Port Moresby following several global and regional climate agencies’ predictions of a potential occurrence of El Nino in the second half of 2017.

The El Nino could bring drier than normal conditions to PNG.

The 2015 and 2016 El Nino caused widespread drought and frost in PNG, which affected an estimated 2.4 million people, with 480,000 people impacted by severe food shortage.

National strategy on Gender Based Violence to be launched

The strategy aims to strengthen the work on GBV in order to achieve zero-tolerance towards GBV by 2025 and as per PNG Vision 2050.

The GBV Strategy was endorsed by the National Executive Council on December 15.

Minister for Community Development, Youth and Religion Delilah Gore said the strategy does not reinvent structures and processes.

The GBV strategy builds on existing interventions at national and sub-national level to secure government ownership and a stronger focus on coordination and monitoring for quality.
