GBV A Disease

The video, titled ‘Pathways to Justice – Strongim sindaun bilong femili’, is a documentary that showcases the legal and support options made available for survivors of family and sexual violence in PNG and how the people and services are working hard to keep them safe.

Commissioner Manning in his speech told the Consultative Implementation and Monitoring Council (CIMC) and the Family and Sexual Violence Action Committee (FSVAC) that the constabulary is committed in addressing Gender Based Violence (GBV) in the country.

Partnership To Address GBV, Child Abuse

This follows after a conclusion of a two-day program held on upskilling front-line workers in the country that assist family and sexual violence survivors and their children.

The training program is a collaboration in training safe house staff on how to be familiar with the different respective areas, and equips them better on how to help mothers and children when they require assistance from safe houses. In most cases, the children go either alone or with their mothers.

Enhance Policies On Human Trafficking

In a publication released in June 2020 titled; “Human Trafficking in the Context of a Global Pandemic”, the report describes how the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the number of vulnerable people to human trafficking.

The reports stated that Human Trafficking is one of the worst forms of Gender Based Violence where victims are forced to meet certain expectations in homes, workplaces and in the community.

FSVAC calls for leadership

The FSVAC is appealing to community and tribal leaders as well as individuals including men, to put an end to the fighting and pursue conflict resolution so that much needed humanitarian support and government assistance can continue into the province.

According to ground reports, displaced women and children who have been traumatized by the earthquake disaster have been greatly affected and have become further displaced after tribal fights erupted in parts of Tari.

Domestic violence thrives when we are silent and do not do anything about it, but if we take a stand and work together to educate and create awareness we can reduce the incidents of domestic violence,” says FSVAC National Coordinator, Marcia Kalinoe.

PNG observes domestic violence awareness month

Papua New Guinea as one of the countries in the Pacific experiencing increasing cases of gender based violence is joining the rest of the World in observing this significant campaign.

Evidence from research shows that 2 in 3 women in PNG are victims of violence. This means that more than 80% of women in PNG experience various forms of violence such as sexual (rape, sexual harassment, incest, etc.), physical, verbal, emotional, psychological, cohesive control, cultural or religious violence.

Research also shows that 67 % of PNG women suffer from domestic abuse alone.
