Eda Ranu: Use water wisely

Eda Ranu’s Chief Operating Officer Dr Fifaia Matainaho says residents, businesses, and companies need to seriously look into how it can minimise the use of water.

He says everyone should cut their usage of water by 50 percent.

“ I would encourage residents or communities, businesses to start using water bore, ”Matainaho urges.

He says the more water is preserved the better it will be for everyone during this time when there is uncertainty with rainfall.

Eda Ranu is asking people to use water wisely by:

  • Spending less time in the shower

Eda Ranu concerned about shortage

Chief Operating Officer Dr Fifaia Matainaho says the current water rationing exercise is part of their strategy to save water.

“We need to understand that we do not have any other source for water and we all rely on Sirinumu dam for our use,” he says.

Eda Ranu estimates that by the first week of January Sirinumu will have only 100 million cubic metres.

As soon as this happens PNG Power will stop using Sirinumu for power generation and turn to its other source of energy.

Capital city running out of water

Eda Ranu announced in a statement today that the rationing will start on December 7…next Monday.

In a statement, Eda Ranu said due to the prolonged dry weather period being experienced in the country, they will be rationing as of that day.

The water at the dam has depleted at  a faster reduction rate “due to precipitation and associated factors’’.

“The rationing exercise is necessary to preserve the remaining 35% of water at the Sirinumu Dam to last till mid 2016 or until such time we get sufficient rainfall,’’ The statement said.

City MP pumps strongly on water supply

A majority of his electorate constituents live in settlements and the first term MP is adamant all must have water piped and running to their areas before the next election.

During the launching of water connection to Turf Club settlers at 9 mile, outside Port Moresby, Amaiu revealed that the project is the district’s 21st  water project and over K8 million had been spent so far.

Eda Ranu commercial manager Paul Gore challenged the settlers to keep their part of the deal to let water flow into the area and also encouraged them to save water in this dry season.

City water supply to improve with new testing lab

The lab is part of EDA RANU's Environment and Quality Control (EQC) Division’s effort to enhance water quality.

The K300 000 facility will be used to test water samples to check for bacteria in the water supply treatment at Mt Eriama, Sogeri.

There are six staff operating the lab including a microbiologist, environment and quality control inspectors, trade waste officers and a quality assurance officer.

The scientists were trained in Sydney.

They’re responsible for testing the water samples and make recommendations on how to improve water quality.

Our water is WHO compliant: Water boss

Chief Executive Officer Henry Mokono says Eda Ranu standards are never compromised.

Eda Ranu is responding to concerns for safe drinking water by the Fiji delegation here for the Pacific Games.

The Fiji team sent an SOS this week to its major sponsor "Fiji Water" to supply the team with drinking water.

Fiji Times reported it's contingent had to boil water when safe drinking water became a concern for its athletes.

Mokono says Eda Ranu provides a world class product which adheres to World Health organisation drinking water standards.

Building owners must install fire hydrants: Water chief

Mokono says the issue of fire hydrants is serious and must be addressed.

He says a meeting between Eda Ranu and PNG Fire Service to further discuss this is scheduled to take place tomorrow.

“It is a requirement of any building, especially apartments or an office complex must have fire hydrants.  This is something building owners like to avoid,’’ Mokono says.

He says any fire hydrant has to be tested and certified by the PNG Fire Service and Eda Ranu.

Water chief promises no cuts during Games

Eda Ranu chief executive officer Henry Mokono says all venues of the Pacific Games are connected to the main water supply.

With 15 – 20 thousand people expected to arrive in the country the demand for water will also be high.

“We are ready and we are working closely with the Games infrastructure committee to ensure water will not be interrupted unnecessarily,” Mokono guaranteed.

He says City residents will not be affected during the games as they have six water reservoirs to supply water throughout the city.
