Windows 10 search bar bug frustrates users

Dozens posted on social media that Windows Search stopped working for them, as of Wednesday morning.

Users say that when they use the desktop search tool it brings up a blank box rather than related results.

It is currently unclear how many of the operating system's 800 million users worldwide are affected by the problem.

The BBC has asked Microsoft for comment.

The bug (CVE-2017-0290), tagged as “crazy bad” by the researchers, was present in the Microsoft Malware Protection Engine, a software component that fuels various anti-malware products including MS Security Essentials and the inbuilt Windows Defender tool in different Windows versions.

“Microsoft’s cyberforensics have identified over one thousand activations of Microsoft software originating from IP address 69.92.99.109 (‘the IP Address’), which is presently assigned to Cable One, Inc,” – as per the complaint submitted by Microsoft.

The case was filed in a Seattle court last Thursday. Microsoft’s pirate chase campaign involves tracking of IP addresses of people who have activated illegal copies of various Microsoft products like the Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Office 2013, and the recent addition being Windows 10 and Office 2016.

Such a leap sounds dubious but the figures take into account all devices, not just PCs, plus Christmas sales of Windows 10 hardware is sure to have helped its cause.

Windows 10 Mobile update pushed back to early next year

The Redmond firm has announced that its latest operating system will not be rolled out to older devices until "early 2016".

"This November we introduced Windows 10 to phones including brand new features such as Continuum and Universal Windows Apps with the introduction of the Lumia 950 and 950 XL," said Microsoft in a statement.

"The Windows 10 Mobile upgrade will begin rolling out early next year to select existing Windows 8 and 8.1 phones."
