Probe into US couple's death focusing on toxin

The couple died while on a holiday in Nadi last month and infectious diseases have been ruled out as the cause of death.

Michelle's father Marc Canalog told the Fiji Times he was informed by officials from the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that investigators were focusing on the toxic chemical paraquat.

Paraquat is a herbicide widely used in Fiji.

Organisations involved and supporting the Ministry of Health in the investigation include the CDC and the World Health Organisation.

     

State of Origin-related death: NCD police

NCD Metropolitan Superintendent, Perou N’Dranou, questioned why Papua New Guineans would put their own lives on the line for an event that they would gain nothing from.

Police in the nation’s capital have reported two major incidents related to the State of Origin (SOO) match on the 5th of June.

Both incidents occurred in the early hours of Thursday. The first one was a confirmed homicide case at Vadavada following a drunken brawl amongst SOO supporters at 2am.

“Deceased was from Chuave, Simbu, while the suspect was from Goilala,” said N’Dranou.

Elderly woman caught in crossfire, succumbs to injury

The 85-year-old woman from Suau, Milne Bay Province, was inside a house when she was hit by a stray bullet and taken to the hospital at around 5.30pm yesterday.

According to police, the gunfight, which lasted for over 30 minutes, erupted after criminals ambushed a police patrol at Garuboi within the precincts of Alotau town.

A policeman in Alotau said the suspects were positioned at a vantage point atop a hill and they used high powered weapons to attack the policemen.

Alleged domestic violence claims young mother’s life

This tragic incident occurred on Sunday July 29th in Port Moresby’s Five-Mile suburb and the late Danagi Gumai’s husband, who has been suspected of beating her to death, is now in police custody.

Gumai’s mother Emily Gemo told Loop PNG that her sister called her at about 5:30pm on Monday, July 30th, to tell her that Danagi was taken to the Port Moresby General Hospital’s emergency the previous day.

Kikori community hosts blood ritual

The traditional ritual is performed when a relative dies.

The ceremony was held at the right wing of the Koki Fish Market.

The family is mourning the loss of two brothers; one killed in cold blooded murder and the other in prison for the death of his brother.

One of the elders explained to the public and the Moresby South MP, Justin Tkatchenko, who was there to witness the ceremony, that the “blood ceremony” is to wash away the deceased’s blood that had spilled on the murder site. 

Mt Hagen killings reported during weekend

One was of an elderly woman who was slashed to death while the other was a young man.

Western Highlands Provincial Police Commander, Jacob Kamiak, said the woman was slashed with an axe on her left ear, right cheek and right rib.

She died in the process.

PPC Kamiak said the suspect has been arrested and charged with wilful murder.

That incident occurred in Pila Village, Baia River, on Friday 8th of June.

The other death was reported on the 9th of June when a man was found dead in a drain opposite Flyers in Kagamuga.

Jurisdiction over US serviceman’s death queried

The NCD Metropolitan police commander, Perou N'Dranou, said since the death last Thursday, no information has been forthcoming from the embassy to assist police in their investigations.

He says given that the death occurred on PNG soil, the jurisdiction would fall to the local police to investigate.

“I will deal with the situation in finding out the cause behind the deaths of the four youth, and also to acknowledge those who were killed,” he stated.

Four youth were allegedly killed by police during the Madang unrest, which started with an April 7 confrontation at Four-Mile market.

Oman police confirm 'no criminal suspicion' in Avicii death

The 28-year-old was found dead on Friday in Oman's capital city, Muscat. A cause of death has not been released.

"Two post mortems were carried out," Royal Oman Police said, confirming there was "no criminal suspicion".

Avicii, whose real name was Tim Bergling, had been in Oman on holiday. His family have arrived in the country to return his body to Sweden.

Convict dies at Bomana

Jail Commander, Superintendent Haraha Kiddy Keko, has confirmed the passing of Abraham Maken.

The late Maken was convicted on February 23 over the murder of Wilfred Langu on July 15, 2015, after a drunken brawl at Taurama.

Commander Keko said the prisoner had TB and was on medication till his passing.

“He had some fracture when he was young but medical also revealed he had TB. So he was also treated for TB until he passed away.  

“He’s still in our custody because we need to sort out his casket. That will be our responsibility,” Keko said.
