Businesses turn on treat for needy kids

The feast of food and sweets included roasted chicken, hot dogs, bread and items like twisties, cakes, lollies and drinks.

The feast was organised by the Royal Papua Yacht Club and the National Gaming and Control Board and supported by business houses in the city to the  tune of K60,000 in cash and kind.

The Prime Minister Peter Neill Foundation also chipped in K10,000 towards the feast.

Before the meal, the kids had fun together playing ball games and dance competitions that kept them busy.

The Oscar winner was joined on stage by Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, their daughters, Malia and Sasha, and Michelle's mother, Marian Robinson, for the annual event, and even lent her vocals for some Christmas carols with the family, and singer Aloe Blacc.

"Happy holidays to Reese and everyone here tonight and everyone watching at home," the president said before leading the crowd to a countdown that ultimately ended with the famous lighting of the tree.

“To achieve something PNG never achieved before, we need to commit ourselves to the Christian values and love to our people to become role models,’ said Mr Polye in his Christmas message to Papua New Guineans.

He said everyone including himself needed a “committed service towards our people”.

“We don’t only need to end corruption and greed by way of those in power to take the lead. Also we need a sustainable, healthy and prosperous future for our people in villages and towns,” he said.
