Cautious optimism and Australia on the outer: Five things you need to know about Cop26 so far

A climate summit billed as the last, best chance to deal with global heating finally got under way in Glasgow this week. More than 100 national leaders came together for the 26th conference of the parties (Cop26). Speeches were given, deals were done and protests were held. But was any progress made?

Here are five things to know from the first week.

NDC Vital To Address Climate Change

Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to COP26, Wera Mori outlined this importance of NDCs while speaking at the High Level Event on the Regional Pacific NDC Hub’s Strategy 2030, at the COP26 Climate Summit, in Scotland on Wednesday, 3rd of November.

He stated that Central to the NDCs is the concept of national determination. These determinations are national climate plans highlighting climate actions, climate related targets, policies and measures governments aim to implement in response to climate change and as contribution to global climate action.

Bill Gates Meets PNG leaders

Mr Gates met with members of the Coalition for Rainforest Nations and Ernst & Young Global Limited at the PNG Pavilion before stopping by to meet and greet the PNG Delegation.
Apart from other countries, he chose only one place to stop by and that was the PNG Pavilion.

Mr Gates flew back to the US immediately after his brief ‘meet and greet’ with the PNG delegation.

Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to COP26, Wera Mori, said the meeting with Mr Gates is a significant milestone as the look forward to Carbon Trading.

PNG Supports Ceasing Of All Logging

He said the collective decision by COP26 to stop deforestation entirely by 2030, is an agenda PNG has always advocated for under the leadership of Prime Minister, James Marape.

It is now a formal Government policy to ban round-logging by 2025 and ban logging entirely by 2030.
Minister Mori made this announcement while attending the COP26 Summit in Glasgow, Scotland.

“We didn’t know that this would be the position taken up by COP26, here in Glasgow. However, this is a blessing in disguise for Papua New Guinea.

Head Bishop Writes To PM

The 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, is being held in Scotland between October 31 and November 12.

In a letter to the PM, the head bishop raised concerns pertaining to the Wafi-Golpu mine’s proposed deep-sea tailings placement (DSTP) method.

“It is indeed telling that less than 20 of the world’s 2,500 mines use the DSTP waste disposal method,” wrote Rev Dr Urame.

Special Envoy Anticipates Tangible Outcomes

Minister for Environment & Climate Change Wera Mori made these remarks during the first day of the COP26 Leaders’ Summit (Monday), where he intends to make a bold stand, reiterating Prime Minister James Marape’s country statement on climate change, delivered in New York, during the United Nations General Assembly, in September.

He said our bold statement here will be 'Enough of talking, let's take action - We need to walk the talk’.

GEF/GCF To Co-Host Pavilion

The PNG Special Envoy has met with the GCF Executive Director.

The GEF and GCF share a common vision to support nature and climate solutions which work together.

The COP26 UN Climate Change Conference, is hosted by the UK in partnership with Italy.

The conference has kicked off on Sunday October 31, and ends November 12, 2021.

It is being hosted at the Scottish Event Campus in Glasgow.

Biden, Bolsonaro and Xi among leaders agreeing deal to end deforestation

World leaders have agreed a deal that aims to halt and reverse global deforestation over the next decade as part of a multibillion-dollar package to tackle human-caused greenhouse gas emissions.

Xi Jinping, Jair Bolsonaro and Joe Biden are among the leaders who will commit to the declaration at Cop26 in Glasgow on Tuesday to protect vast areas, ranging from the eastern Siberian taiga to the Congo basin, home to the world’s second largest rainforest.

Delegation Set For Climate Summit

The delegation led by the Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Wera Mori, arrived in Glasgow and are preparing for the main event.

Following Prime Minister James Marape's decision not to attend COP26, Minister Mori, now assumes full responsibility as Prime Minister's Special Envoy to lead the PNG delegation throughout the summit.

Instruments of Full Powers were signed off by Foreign Minister Soroi Eoe, delegating these responsibilities to Minister Mori.
