Round two: PNG vs Fiji, Samoa vs Vanuatu

PNG face Fiji in a vital rematch while hosts Samoa will be looking to get their second win when they take on Vanuatu.

The top team will qualify for the 2018 ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup to be played in New Zealand in January next year.

Three wins on the trot for Garamuts

Batting first, the Garamuts set Vanuatu a target of 136 to win. Runs came from Vagi Karaho (24), Nou Reva Rarua (18) and Leke Morea (16).

Obed Yosef was key for Vanuatu with figures of 4/28.

In their pursuit, Vanuatu were stopped short being bowled out for a measly 105 inside 33 overs. Bethan Moli top scored for his side with 23 runs next to his name.

The chief destroyers for the Garamuts were James Junior Tau (3/27), Leke Morea (2/14), Sema Igo Kamea (2/14) and Toua Morgan (2/7).

This comes from a four wicket win over Fiji on Tuesday this week followed by 212 run thrashing of Samoa yesterday.

The Garamuts will go up against Vanuatu tomorrow.

Four countries are taking part in the tournament that started on Tuesday, August 8, and will conclude on Wednesday, August 16.

The tournament is being played in a double round robin 50 over format. The top team will qualify for the 2018 ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup to be played in New Zealand in January next year.

Garamuts thump Samoa

The match was hosted today at Faleata Oval No 2.

The Garamuts took the bat first and went to work. Opener Igo John Mahuru’s 98 runs help set up a mammoth target of 295.

Mahuru smashed nine 4s and two 6s, and was two runs shy of a century when he was dismissed off the bowling of Uili Sofi.

Other contributions came from the middle order in Vagi Karaho (41) and Nou Reva Rarua (33).

Samoa’s run chase was all over inside 23 overs after being bowled out for 83 runs.

School kriket program producing stars

The 14-man Hebou PNG U19 Garamuts squad that will be travelling on Saturday to Apia, Samoa, to compete at 2018 ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup – East Asia-Pacific Qualifier 2017 are all products of the BSP School Kriket Programme. 

Cricket PNG’s regional/Kriket Blo Olgeta (KBO) coordinator, Vaianna Gabba, was delighted to hear this news.  

“We are proud to say that 100 percent of the 14-man Garamuts squad making the team are products of the BSP School Kriket Programme.
