Iraqi housewife 'cooked the heads' of ISIS fighters

Immediately they went quiet, each adjusting his weapon and standing up straight as if he'd been called to attention.

This is a woman who commands respect, I thought. She keeps a Beretta 9-millimeter pistol in a holster under her left arm. The area around the trigger was silver where the paint had worn off.

The woman in question, 39-year-old Wahida Mohamed -- better known as Um Hanadi -- leads a force of around 70 men in the area of Shirqat, a town 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Mosul, Iraq.

US says it killed IS information minister al-Fayad

Also known as "Dr Wa'il", he was minister of information for IS, and oversaw the production of propaganda videos showing executions.

The Pentagon said the strike had taken place near Raqqa on 7 September.

Fayad was a close associate of IS strategist Abu Muhammad al-Adnani, who was killed in an air strike last month.

French prosecutor: Women who planned attack were directed by ISIS

The women were arrested Thursday in connection with gas cylinders found inside a car left in front of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. One of the women had a letter in her purse swearing allegiance to ISIS, Molins said.

In the letter, she said she was answering the call of Abu Mohammad al-Adnani, according to Molins. Adnani, one of the highest-ranking figures in ISIS, was killed in late August.

Philippines: IS-linked Maute group inmates freed in 'raid'

Police said at least 20 fighters from the Maute group had turned up at the Lanao del Sur jail in the southern city of Marawi, but no shots had been fired.

A military source told the BBC they believed the men had been allowed to escape.

The militants were held last week after being caught with homemade mortars.

At least 15 other inmates - who faced murder and drugs charges - also walked free, but it is not clear whether this was agreed.

The Maute group has carried out several bombings and kidnappings in the southern Mindanao region.

Iraq hangs 36 IS jihadists for Camp Speicher massacre

     

The massacre at Camp Speicher, near Tikrit, was carried out by fighters from so-called Islamic State (IS) as it seized territory across northern Iraq.

Outrage over the massacre of the mostly Shia cadets helped mobilise Iraq's Shia militias in the fight against IS.

IS militants released photos and video documenting the massacre in 2014. Mass graves were found a year later.

The graves were discovered when Iraqi government forces recaptured the area.

Turkey wedding suicide bomber 'was child aged 12-14'

Mr Erdogan said the so-called Islamic State (IS) was behind the attack, which targeted a Kurdish wedding party. Gaziantep, near the Syrian border, is known to have several IS cells.

The bomb wounded 69 people, Mr Erdogan added, 17 of them seriously.

The bomber targeted the wedding guests as they danced in the street.

The BBC's Seref Isler, who is from Gaziantep, says the city of 1.5 million was already on edge because of events in Syria, where IS has been battling Syrian Kurdish forces.

Libya: ISIS all but defeated in Moammar Gadhafi's hometown

Forces loyal to the the U.N.-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli, already in control of most of the city, liberated one of only three remaining districts under ISIS control on Tuesday, a security official told CNN Wednesday.

Col. Ismail Shukri, head of Intelligence for the Tripoli government in Misrata -- 167 miles (270km) to the north-west of Sirte -- told CNN their forces had captured a neighborhood from ISIS in Sirte designated "District 2," leaving only "Districts 1 and 3" under ISIS control.

US troops lost weapons to ISIS in firefight

The Pentagon had previously indicated that photos of the military items paraded by ISIS on the Internet this weekend were likely American and lost during recent operations in Afghanistan.

On Tuesday, Brig.-Gen. Charles Cleveland, chief spokesman for the US-led anti-ISIS coalition, said US troops came under "effective enemy fire" in eastern Afghanistan on July 25.

UN: ISIS captures up to 3,000 people fleeing violence in Iraq

The UN refugee agency said it had received reports that ISIS rounded up the thousands of internally displaced people Thursday from villages as they tried to escape to the city of Kirkuk.

Egypt 'kills head of IS in Sinai'

It said Abu Duaa al-Ansari was killed in a series of air strikes on fighters of the Sinai Province - or Ansar Beit al-Maqdis - group.

The air strikes targeted jihadist strongholds near the town of El-Arish.

Sinai Province is Egypt's most active insurgent group and has been linked to deadly attacks in Sinai and Cairo.

The Egyptian military said: "The raids left more than 45 terrorists killed, dozens of others injured and several arms caches destroyed."
