New governor welcomed back to job

The National Alliance (NA) Party and a leader of the Telefomin people have welcomed the election of Sandaun Governor Amkat Mai over the weekend.

Party representative and Nuku MP Joe Sungi, who was in Vanimo to welcome Mai, said NA is in the current government and Mai is part of that  government to deliver services and development to the province.

"NA is part of the current government. Our party leader Patrick Pruaitch is the Treasurer and Mai is part of that government," he said.

The MP said their party leader and grand chief Sir Michael Somare could not make it to Vanimo to celebrate Mai's victory due to other commitments but relayed through him.

He said Mai had missed out for the last two years because of the court actions.

He was glad the people had shown their trust in his leadership and reappointed him to lead the province for the remaining two years.

Meanwhile, the people of Telefomin have thanked the people of Sandaun for electing Mr Mai as their Governor.

It was about time one of their own sons was appointed to look after the affairs of Sandaun province,

Telefomin MP Solam Mirisim said when witnessing the signing of the papers between Mai and the returning officer Kila Ralai in Vanimo over the weekend.

"On behalf of my people from Telefomin, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Sandaun for electing Amkat Mai as our new governor. Now we have a leader so we need to work with him to see some changes in the province.

"We as leaders must put aside our differences and work together with Mai to develop our province. There is a great need to develop our province," he said.

Mai was the winner in the recent by election of the Sandaun Provincial seat after it was brought to the court, alleging under-age voting in the Telefomin area.
