Kurakums gets exposure in Queensland AFL Championship

Papua New Guinea Australian Football League has taken huge step forward in building female AFL athletes after introducing their AFL school competition program.

With the AFL Development program, the PNG Youth girls’ team has participated in the recent Queensland Championship to gain exposure.

It’s really good to be back after 3 years to showcase our girls and give them a feel of the game in a tournament, says AFL Development Manager South Pacific.

“As part of the development program, we have been running U13 and U15 school competitions over the last 4 years. And it has been growing and now we have a large pool of girls playing AFL all over in PNG and not just in Port Moresby,” Drew said.

AFL PNG Development Academy and Player Welfare Manager William Yogomin also stress that it use to be a male dominated sport but now with the school competition hosted under the development program has encouraged a lot of girls from U13 and U15 to take part.
