Could easyJet's hybrid planes make air travel greener?

easyJet has revealed a design concept for a hybrid plane that could help save the environment and cut costs in the aviation industry.

The eco-friendly aircraft has a hydrogen fuel cell at its core and energy-absorbing brakes that draw in reusable power on landing.

The energy-absorbing brakes and hybrid engines are designed to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions, plus having less fuel to carry around should reduce costs for airlines.

eastJet's engineering director Ian Davies came up with the concept and enlisted the help of students at Cranfield University to put the prototype designs together.

"The hybrid plane concept we are announcing today is both a vision of the future and a challenge to our partners and suppliers to continue to push the boundaries towards reducing our carbon emissions," said Davies.

easyJet is aiming to hold early trials for the technology this year.
