Nomination deadline extended

It was moved from March 12 to March 23 by the SPSA Committee.

SPSA Committee Chairman, Tania Mairi Mahuru, is happy with the nominations received so far from the various sporting codes.

“2017 was a great year for sports. A good number of codes won a number of their events including AFL, who won the International Aussie Rules Cup in Melbourne, defending their title for the second consecutive year; the SP PNG Hunters, winning their first Intrust Super Cup grand final and even in basketball and weightlifting.

More nominations expected this year

Last year, 155 nominations were received from around Papua New Guinea.

‘We’re looking forward to a lot of entries coming in. There was a lot that happened last year in sports.

“My committee is ready to convene and give you all the finalists for each category in a couple of months’ time.”

He issued a reminder that there are qualifications to meet before an individual, team or media organization is nominated. 

“There are specific rules that must be complied with before nominating.”

SP sports awards to be launched

This year will mark 26 years for the SP Sports Awards and nominations for the 2018 SP Sports Awards.

SP Sports Awards is an event that recognises sporting excellence from Papua New Guinea’s sports men and women.

The nominations will officially be opened in order after the launch and will be witnessed by various heads of sporting organisations at the Brew Kettle, SP Brewery Head Office in Port Moresby.

More details will be released in the days leading up to the launch of the SP Sports awards.

Recognise community sports champions: Director

“Big congratulations to all the finalists with special mention to all the category winners announced at the SP PNG Sports Awards on Saturday in Port Moresby,” Alsop said.  

He further proposed for the creation of additional categorises to recognise community sports administrators.    

“I'd like to propose that the following categories be suggested for addition to the list of awards recognised next year. They play an incredible role in sport and the lives of many athletes,” Alsop said.

The King to be special guest at SP Sports Awards

The news was made public this week at the announcement of the finalists for the awards.

The former Australian captain and Queensland State of Origin hero played 29 State of Origin matches and a decade-long Test career spanning 34 matches.

“I’m looking forward to meeting you all at the 2017 SP Sports Awards night,” said Lewis.

The SP Sports Awards will be held on May 27 at the Crowne Plaza, Port Moresby.

 

Cast your votes for People’s Choice Award!

Chairman of the SP Sports Awards, Andrew Lepani, said people can vote for the sports personality of their choice by selecting one of the three finalists in the Male Athlete of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year, Team of the Year and the National Performance of the Year awards.

To vote, people can send an SMS to code 1600.

Finalists announced for SP Sports Awards

A five-member selection panel sat last week to deliberate on the 155 nominations received from around Papua New Guinea, and reached a consensus for the top three finalists for each of the 13 categories.

Chairperson for the SP Sports Awards (SPSA) selection panel, Moses Koiri, said this year, nominations were slow but picked up after a one-week extension of the closing date for entries.

He said apart from the National Capital District, a good number of the entries received were from other provinces.

More nominations called for sports awards

President of the PNGOC, Sir John Dawanincura encouraged all Papua New Guineans to be part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations by nominating a sports person or organization for one of the 11 categories available.

“Closing date for all nominations is April 3, 2017 and we want to see a flood of nominations from all over the country,” said Dawanincura,

Reflecting on the 25 years of the SP Sports Awards, he said the program has achieved its goals in giving importance to the achievements of athletes, officials, sports administrators and the media.

SP Sports Awards reaches 25 years

SP Sports Awards is an event that recognizes sporting excellence from Papua New Guinea’s sports men and women.

The nominations were officially opened by Managing Director of SP Brewery, Stan Joyce, Secretary General of the PNG Olympic Committee, Auvita Rapilla and Sports Minister, Justin Tkatchenko.

It was witnessed by various heads of sporting organizations at the SP Brewery Head Office in Port Moresby.

Joyce stressed the important role of sports in the country, in the community and in the lives of people.
